Air Purifier Electricity Use: Annual kWh Across 247 ENERGY STAR Records
The median certified record reports 152 kWh per year — about $24.32 at a hypothetical $0.16/kWh. But two models with the same cleaning capacity can differ by more than 4.6× in reported annual energy, so capacity alone does not settle the bill.

Reported annual energy by smoke-CADR range
Higher certified cleaning capacity generally comes with higher reported annual energy, but the ranges overlap heavily: the least-energy record at 300+ cfm (Rainbow Luggable XXL, 75 kWh) reports less annual energy than the most-energy record under 100 cfm (Bosch Air 2000, 104 kWh). These records are named to illustrate the spread, not to rank products.
Each point is one ENERGY STAR record: smoke CADR (cfm) versus reported annual energy (kWh/yr).
| Smoke CADR | Records | Median kWh | kWh range | Median W | cfm/W range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–<100 cfm | 49 | 55 | 30–104 | 9.2 | 4.23–16.08 |
| 100–<200 cfm | 83 | 127 | 42–195 | 21.5 | 5.28–15.86 |
| 200–<300 cfm | 44 | 219 | 93–309 | 37.5 | 5.43–21.59 |
| 300+ cfm | 71 | 335 | 75–490 | 56 | 5.49–23.96 |
Capacity predicts energy, but not well enough to skip the label
Across this snapshot the Pearson correlation between smoke CADR and reported annual kWh is r ≈ 0.92. That describes the dataset, not a physical law or a purchasing rule: within the 100–199 cfm range alone, reported annual energy runs from 42 kWh (Rainbow Exhalaron Ultra Tri) to 195 kWh (Coway AP-1125G) — a 4.6× difference at similar certified capacity. Certified smoke cfm-per-watt spans 4.23 to 23.96 across all records.
The practical takeaway is narrow: check the certified annual kWh and CADR-per-watt fields on the specific record you are considering, rather than assuming a larger or smaller unit will use more or less energy. We make no brand or model recommendation from these fields.
Two different energy numbers
The certification dataset reports annual energy use in kWh. It also reports smoke CADR-per-watt, from which we derive operating watts (smoke CADR ÷ smoke CADR-per-watt); these are derived values, not our power measurements. A hypothetical 24/7 scenario (derived watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000) exceeds the reported annual figure in every record: the ratio runs 1.01× to 1.55×, with a median of 1.48×.
We do not reproduce or assert the usage profile behind ENERGY STAR's annual figure, and rounding in the published fields may affect the ratio. Treat the 24/7 number as a what-if ceiling, not a measurement or a prediction of your usage.
What a kWh is worth: hypothetical rates only
Annual cost = reported annual kWh × electricity rate. The table below applies three explicitly hypothetical flat rates so you can see how sensitive the conclusion is; your actual rate depends on your utility, region and plan and is not quoted here. Five-year figures are the median record's cost × 5, with no discounting or price escalation.
| Rate ($/kWh) | Median record | Lowest record | Highest record | Median × 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0.10 | $15.20/yr | $3.00/yr | $49.00/yr | $76.00 |
| $0.16 | $24.32/yr | $4.80/yr | $78.40/yr | $122 |
| $0.25 | $38.00/yr | $7.50/yr | $123/yr | $190 |
Purchase prices and filter replacement costs are not certification fields and are not verified anywhere on this site, so we publish no total-cost-of-ownership ranking. The 2-year cost calculator works only with values you enter.
Inclusion rules and reproducibility
This study uses the same snapshot as the room-coverage analysis: 247 source records retrieved on 2026-10-20, of which 247 met the inclusion rules (finite positive smoke CADR and reported room area). All 247 included records also carry finite positive annual kWh and derived operating watts, so the energy analysis loses none of them. There is one row per ENERGY STAR ID; product families are not deduplicated and the feed is not a market census.
The CSV preserves full precision and adds the derived 24/7 scenario and the three rate scenarios per record. The archived source rows and checksum manifest are shared with the coverage study.
bun scripts/export-energy-use.tsWhat this study cannot tell you
The energy figures are certification data, not our measurements; derived watts inherit the published fields' rounding. We did not measure real-world usage, standby draw, low-speed behavior, noise or filter life, and we cannot say how any unit performs in your home or what you will pay. "Most Efficient" counts reflect the snapshot's marker, not a product endorsement. This analysis has not received independent review and is not presented as peer-reviewed.
