Why PureAirIndex exists
Most air purifier advice repeats box claims. We start from certification records instead and show the math, so you can check every number yourself.
What we do
We analyse the ENERGY STAR Certified Room Air Cleaners dataset (247 records in our current snapshot) and publish studies, calculators and guides built on it: room sizing, air changes per hour, CADR, electricity use and efficiency.
Where the data comes from
Performance figures (CADR, reported room area, annual energy, efficiency) come from the public ENERGY STAR dataset at data.energystar.gov. We don't change them. Anything we calculate — such as 24/7 running cost or air changes per hour — is labelled as a calculation, with the assumptions stated. Each study links a downloadable CSV of the rows it uses.
We do not run our own lab tests. PureAirIndex is not affiliated with the EPA, ENERGY STAR or AHAM. Details are on the methodology page.
How the site is funded
PureAirIndex is currently self-funded and has no advertising or affiliate links. If we add affiliate links in future, they will be clearly disclosed, and they will never change the data, calculations or rankings.
Corrections
If you find an error — including manufacturers who believe a record is out of date — tell us and we will check it against the current ENERGY STAR listing and update the page with a dated note.
